Houston Juvenile Defense Lawyer
Effective & Affordable Legal Representation in Texas
One of the worst situations a parent can experience is getting a call in the middle of night or early morning to find out that their son or daughter has been arrested. Although the juvenile justice system is designed to rehabilitate, rather than punish, minor offenders are often subject to harsh penalties that do not help them make a positive change in their lives, which is why you need an attorney to fight for the most favorable outcome for your child.
If your child has been arrested, our Houston juvenile defense attorney at Holt Law understands what it takes to protect your child’s rights and future from serious criminal penalties. We can review your case and determine all your legal options to get your child’s life back on the right path.
The Juvenile Justice System
As we mentioned before, the juvenile justice system is designed to rehabilitate juvenile offenders to help them avoid becoming criminals when they are adults. The juvenile court issues a delinquency petition, rather than charging a minor. If a judge determines that the minor committed the juvenile crime, he/she will be designated a “delinquent child” and could be subject to probation with conditions such as community service, restitution, full school attendance, and routine drug testing.
Common types of juvenile crimes include:
- Underage drinking
- Drug possession
- Curfew violations
- Traffic violations
However, minors who are at least 15 years old that are repeat offenders, commit violent delinquent acts, or do not have any parental support could be subject to a juvenile detention facility. Additionally, minors who are over 14 can accused of committing violent felonies such as murder, rape, armed robbery, and other serious violent crimes could be tried as adults through the criminal justice system, making them subject to prison time, fines, and a permanent criminal record.
